OMP/pic du Midi outreach day a success!
The outreach day organized by the Pic du Midi management company’s mediation department and the OMP’s education department was a resounding success on Monday, December 2, 2024.
Some forty participants, including researchers, experts from the Parc National des Pyrénées, Pic du Midi mediators and instant science, met at the OMP in Tarbes on Monday to discuss the latest scientific projects underway and in preparation at the Pic du Midi Observatory.
Researchers took turns to speak in the morning, and the afternoon was an opportunity to listen to experts from the educators and professional mediators department about the tools and projects developed in recent months.
The day’s events provided an opportunity to learn more about the research projects of the Pyrenees Atmospheric Platform (François Gheuzi, Véronique Pont, Serge Soula, at Pic du Midi and the CRA). Infrared measurements of snow cover (Simon Gascoin, CESBIO), data collection on plant growth in a hydroponic system (Nicolas Drougard, ISAE), the latest developments on astronomical domes (Arturo Lopez Ariste on the C3 coronagraph, the Bernard Lyot Telescope, Jean-Baptiste Daban on tent domes).
Frédéric Pitout told us about the solar corona service.
The afternoon was devoted to projects under development in environment-related disciplines, including monitoring of the Alpine Niverolles population (Philippe Fontanilles, Parc National des Pyrénées), botanical garden projects (Sarah Abellan, Régie du pic). An update on the Pic du Midi and its observatory’s World Heritage listing (Rémi Cabanac, OMP), educational projects with schools (Sylvain Rondi, Académie des HP), a conference on the history of optician Bernard Lyot (Jean-Christophe Sanchez, Researcher UT2 and Rectorat).
The final part of the afternoon was enlivened by a presentation of the escape box developed by Instant Science (Emilien Bernard, Instant Science).
